In 2024, Colegio Suizo de México proudly unveils its new Media Lab—a transformative space that reflects both the school’s forward-thinking vision and the accelerated shift towards digital learning brought about by an evolving world and the limitations and opportunities allowed by the Covid-19 pandemic. As an English teacher and fan of recording our student’s voices, making trailers for books we’ve enjoyed, audio reviews and 50 word summaries, even making unique audiobook drama versions for primary, I saw this period of time after lockdown as a perfect opportunity to return to the idea of having a dedicated language recording space in school, and taking advantage of the innovation and development departments interest, conversations were once again on the table.

Today, the Media Lab is a space designed to enhance learning through digital creation, aligning with the principles and purposes of the Educational Model. This project has taken a year and a half to materialize and has been subjected to a thorough and complete process, including identifying pedagogical needs and reviewing financial sustainability. Finally, with the relocation of the ‘Dead Files’ archives to the new San Borja building, we are thrilled to announce that the lab occupies the only windowless space on campus, providing an ideal environment for audio and video production. This controlled setting ensures superior acoustics and lighting management, ideal for creative media projects.
The Covid-19 lockdown highlighted the urgent need for advanced digital literacy, pushing both educators and students to engage with remote and innovative learning technologies. The Media Lab aims to build on this momentum, offering a modern hub for skill development in digital storytelling, broadcasting, and content creation. Students and staff can now harness the power of multimedia not only for personal growth but also to enhance language acquisition across subjects like English, German, French, Spanish, and Chinese. These opportunities extend beyond basic language skills, promoting fluency in real-world communication and expression through podcasts, video blogs, green screen adventures and other media formats.

The Media Lab responds to the need for transdisciplinary work where students can develop and materialize their ideas in a disruptive way, having projects that integrate audio, video, images and virtual reality, driven by tools specialized in the creation of digital content, such as greenscreen, microphones, lights and editing software. Students and staff can take advantage of the power of the Media Lab to improve multilingual competencies, key pillars in student training as well as improvement in language acquisition, a characteristic that distinguishes the Swiss school amongst other educational institutions.
The Media Lab at Colegio Suizo de México is more than just a technical space—it’s a creative playground where ideas come to life, empowering students and teachers to explore, learn, and innovate, enhancing the concept of 21st century teaching and learning in ways that will shape the future.
